At The King's School we understand that music has a universal language, cultural identity and immense power to stir emotions.  But we are also aware of the power and importance of praise and worship of a God who knows each of us by name and who is passionate about the people he has created.

Music is important as it bridges the divides between people, helps us to relate to other cultures and people groups, can help with learning and expressing oneself through an avenue other than words, links history with the present and conveys a message in an accessible way.

In Music we aim to:

  • Identify the various elements which make music what it is in both western and non-western traditions
  • Apply knowledge to individual and group compositions, songs and performances
  • Develop an appreciation for all types of music
  • Learn to appraise and improve work
  • Teach those who are naturally gifted how to nurture and steward the gift that God has given them

We believe:

  • We were created for the worship of God
  • Praise and worship can help us to encounter God and can change our lives
  • That music is God's idea and that all creativity comes from Him

Music is taught in a workshop style giving all students the opportunity to play various instruments and develop individual skills.  There is a particular emphasis on composing songs as well as music, where students are expected to draw on knowledge from historical eras, different countries and western styles, using a variety of instruments and music technology.

The school has both a Senior and Junior band which helps lead the school in our praise assemblies during the week as well as for other school occasions.
