At The King's School, the Vocational Studies ethos is totally Bible led.  The children are encouraged to explore and discover their unique "vocation "- their God-given calling in the world of work (from the Latin - "vox" - the voice, "vocare" - to call).

Jeremiah 29:11 is used as one example of God's desire for each child to discover his/her place in society and to be part of the answer, not part of the problem in the world today,

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

Vocational Studies education at The King's School is seen as a whole school issue and as such provides a major platform for the education of "the whole child".

The Vocational Studies area and library are available for all pupils to access. The library is divided into sections and organised on the new Connexions CRCI system.  The ICT facilities are accessible and relevant with internet provision for everyone to use.  The Vocational Studies programme is delivered throughout the school day - class times, assemblies and the daily timetable - to all classes.

The programme was approved to meet Career Mark Standards for years 2000-3 and 2004-7. We have made a decision not to pursue this award as we found its remits were too prescriptive and restrictive to the development of "the whole child".

In addition, Year 9 has an Options Evening to which both pupil and parent are invited to meet the Connexions Personal Adviser and understand the options on offer.  They also have a Study Skills Evening in preparation for Key Stage 4.  Year 10 take part in a two weeks work experience in the Summer term.  From Year 11 onwards all pupils have individual interviews with their Connexions Personal Adviser, have people coming in to offer advice on interview technique and CV writing and have opportunities to visit local colleges and Sixth forms.

At the start of Year 11 an annual Post The King's School Evening is held for both pupils and parents with representatives from a local college and sixth form offering advice.

At The King's School we endeavour to help all pupils to implement their own vocational plan, through raising awareness of requirements and routes into different careers and further education, whilst at the same time making them aware of technical and economic changes and patterns, which may affect future employment.
